Tests of a theory are normally carried out by comparing experimental results to theoretical predictions. In Quantum electrodynamics (QED), one of the most strictly tested theories in physics, theoretical predictions require inputting extremely precise values of, for instance, the fine structure constant, which can only be obtained from precision QED experiments. Among various measurement methods, laser spectroscopy is one of powerful ones. However, the Doppler Effect can be a major obstacle in laser spectroscopy. In this work, we study the line shape of 2S-4P transition in atomic hydrogen induced by anti-parallel laser beams. We show that the use of these counter propagating laser beams can largely suppress the Doppler shift, leaving only a higher-order term. In this talk, I will present mainly the theoretical part of our work.

常越博士,现担任德国马克斯普朗克量子光学研究所博士后研究员,研究领域是量子光学,量子模拟,冷原子和分子物理,凝聚态物理。2002年9月至2006年7月,常越在广州bat365在线平台网站获得物理学学士学位;2006年9月至2011年7月,常越在中科院理论所师从孙昌璞院士,获理学博士学位,曾于2008年10月至12月访问日本RIKEN实验室。自2012年8月起,常越旅德在马普量子光学研究所从事博士后研究工作。
